چکیده

Studies of palaeo-accumulation rates at Dome A, East Antarctica, are entirely absent. Here, spatio-temporal variations in ice accumulation rates for the past ∼161 ka are calculated from isochronous internal layering, traced from radio-echo sounding (RES) data collected by the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC) during the 21st CHINARE. The layers are dated by linking them to the site of Vostok ice core along an RES profile, which was flown by the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (AWI) in the Dome Connection East Antarctica (DoCo) project. The Dansgaard-Johnsen model is used to determine the spatial and temporal pattern of ice accumulation in Dome A region. The results show that there is a slight increasing pattern of ice accumulation from south to north along the 216 km radar profile at Dome A. The lowest ice accumulation rates were calculated around the Dome A zone. In the past∼90 ka, there were relatively high accumulation rates during the time period 34–47 ka (Marine Isotope Stage 3) at

Genesis and Deformation of Firn Stratigraphy in West and East Antarctica: Evidence from the Us Itase Subsurface Radar Profiles

The US contribution to the ITASE program obtained shallow and deep radar profiles along its thousands of km of traverse during 1999–2003 over West Antarctica, and along its 1200 km traverse behind the Transantarctic Mountains in East Antarctica during 2006–2007. I discuss the shallow profiles, which used short-pulse radar operating at 400 MHz to profile depths of 56–135 m in West Antarctica, an...

Snow accumulation variability derived from radar and firn core data along a 600 km transect in Adelie Land, East Antarctic plateau

The mass balance of ice sheets is an intensively studied topic in the context of global change and sealevel rise. However – particularly in Antarctica – obtaining mass balance estimates remains difficult due to various logistical problems. In the framework of the TASTE-IDEA (Trans-Antarctic Scientific Traverses Expeditions – Ice Divide of East Antarctica) program, an International Polar Year pr...

The Accumulation Pattern across Siple Dome, West Antarctica, Inferred from Radar-detected Internal Layers

The spatial distribution of accumulation across Siple Dome,West Antarc-tica, is determined from analysis of the shapes of internal layers detected by radio-echo sounding (RES) measurements. A range of assumed accumulation patterns is used in an ice-flow model to calculate a set of internal layer patterns. Inverse techniques are used to determine which assumed accumulation pattern produces a cal...

1-D-ice flow modelling at EPICA Dome C and Dome Fuji, East Antarctica

One-dimensional (1-D) ice flow models are used to construct the age scales at the Dome C and Dome Fuji drilling sites (East Antarctica). The poorly constrained glaciological parameters at each site are recovered by fitting independent age markers identified within each core. We reconstruct past accumulation rates, that are larger than those modelled using the classical vapour saturation pressur...

Ice deformation in the vicinity of the ice-core site at Taylor Dome, Antarctica, and a derived accumulation rate history

Knowledge of ice flow and strain rate in the vicinity of the Taylor Dome (East Antarctica) ice-core site enhances interpretation of the paleoclimate information from the ice core. We measured surface ice motion by repeated optical and GPS surveys of a network of 253 markers. We developed a robust data reduction method that uses least squares based on singular value decomposition, to simultaneou...
